How does it work?

The classical texts in Chinese explain that channels of energy coarse through our body in regular patterns, both superficial and deep. These energy channels are the meridians. Qi and Blood flow through them to nourish the tissues and organs. If there is an obstruction in the meridians, the flow stops, much like water blocked by a dam. The acupuncture needles promote movement, unblocking the channels, allowing the energy and nourishment to spread evenly throughout the body. The result is improved function of the internal organs as well as improved circulation of energy, promoting physical and emotional well-being.

One modern scientific explanation is that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These naturally occurring chemicals can change the experience of pain. Closer to the location of the needle, there are hormones released that can promote healing. Another explanation is that ionic fluid can transmit electrical charge along the plains of fascia which cover muscle groups. This allows for an internal semi-conductor system that transmits sensation.  In support of this, the electrical resistance between needles on a meridian has been measured and compared to that of other needle configurations. Meridians are high conductance pathways.  In addition, the patterns of radiating pain which have been mapped out for trigger points follow the meridians, and not the nerves.
